I was so honored to be chosen as IFACC president this year, after only three years with the chorus! This organization is amazing for leadership growth and music education – I have learned SO much already, and I’m just getting started!

I’ve been singing in organized groups almost my whole life, beginning in my hometown of Rochester, Minnesota, with my church choir, my elementary school’s audition-only chorus, and then the Southeast Minnesota Honors Choirs in middle and high school. In college, I sang with the Northwestern University Chapel Choir, and when I moved to Riverton, Wyoming, with my future husband, Cooper, I sang with the Central Wyoming College community chorus.

It took me a while to find a singing group when we moved to Idaho Falls, because we were busy getting married, buying a house, and having a baby! But when I heard a quartet spontaneously singing at City Bagel one weekend, I made a note to check out their group someday. Finally, I wandered into a rehearsal, where I found this raucous, fun group of super-talented singers that blew me away! Barbershop is different from any kind of singing I’ve done before, and I absolutely love learning all the tricks of this entertaining trade.

I’m a native of Southern California and have lived in a few different places as my adult life developed. Served a mission for my church in the Canada Toronto mission for 18 months. After returning to California I married and moved to Western Maryland.  After 3 years and the birth of our first son, we moved back to California to be close to family. For the next 8 years, I went though a divorce, got remarried, had 4 children, and moved to Idaho! Our last child was born in Southern Idaho. My husband, LaRoy, and I appreciate that our children have learned and are now living their best lives as adults. We are the grateful grandparents of 2 beautiful girls.

I was first introduced to Sweet Adeline’s in 2015, but didn’t commit to it until 2016. I have always loved singing and was invited to come check it out after participating in a local theatrical musical production with Jill Bonnel. She asked me where else did I use my talent. During a membership drive I learned how Sweet Adeline’s helps develops good vocal performance. I loved the camaraderie and wanted the personal creative outlet.

Now, having been in and out of the chorus a few times, I serve as Treasurer, sing Baritone (because being in the background is comfortable), and still enjoy the ever growing group I can call friends.

Lucia Ratliff joined the Chorus Board earlier this year, serving as the Ways and Means Chair. Originally from San Diego, Lucia grew up performing in choirs and theatrical productions. She learned about Sweet Adelines International while living abroad, and joined our chapter in Idaho Falls very quickly after moving here. Her favorite thing about singing with the chorus is being able to make fabulous friends and fabulous music all at the same time.

Cheryle Spencer, Member at Large

I cannot remember a time in my life without music.

My Mom and Dad loved the big bands and would dance in the living room to the big 33 LPs they collected for years.

As a child my grama (on my dad's side), my 5 great aunts (Grama’s sisters) and my Auntie (her daughter) would gather around the piano to play and sing beautiful harmonies.  They were all self-taught and were in high demand for weddings, funerals and/or anytime entertainment was desired.  I remember the harmonies being tight and giving me goose-bumps.

I played clarinet in the school band since 6th grade and loved our recitals.  I received a guitar for Christmas when I was 15 and taught myself to play.... of course I sang along.  I always loved performing for my friends and family.

I married young, started a family and my guitar came out of the case only to sing to my babies.  In 2009 my sister-in-law, who had just moved here from Alaska where she was a Sweet Adeline, talked me into visiting the Idaho Falls A Cappella Chorus with her.  She joined and so did I.  My dormant love of music and performing was reawakened.

I love this chorus and the joy and comradery that comes with it.  I have made such good friends and met so many special women!  My world would become so small without my sisters in song!  This organization has enhanced my life in too many ways to count.

I will be forever grateful to have discovered and become a part of the Idaho Falls A Cappella Chorus and the Sweet Adelines International.
